he deserves to go to college

Anthony is now in 8th grade. However, that is so close to college that we need to start seeing what options are available. Anthony is on the autism spectrum. Not all options will be available to him – that is just the way it is. But we know there are options out there and he has always stated that he is planning to go to college.

Recently I learned that Adelphi University has a complete program that factors in the whole student from social and academic to executive functioning in a mainstream, NCAA-sports and cultural arts environment. Adelphi is a world-class, modern university with excellent and highly relevant programs where students prepare for lives of active citizenship and professional careers. Through its schools and programs—College of Arts and Sciences, Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies, Honors College, Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, Ruth S. Ammon School of Education, University College, College of Nursing and Public Health and the School of Social Work—the coeducational university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees as well as professional and educational programs for adults. The Bridges to Adelphi program (that fits into each degree’s curriculum) working with the student on vocational testing as well to make sure they are enrolled in the right program that supports their strengths.

I could not ask for more for Anthony – a college that understands his uniqueness. We are beginning to rest a little more easy knowing there is college in his future. The college even creates a program for students with social anxiety disorder which means it may also be most appropriate for my daughter too! Where else can one find a college for autism spectrum disorder and social anxiety disorder? I feel like our prayers have been answered. These programs all fall under what is called the Bridges to Adelphi program.

An added bonus for us is that Adelphi University is far enough away from us that the kids will totally be able to enjoy their college experience, yet not so far away that we can’t support them if they need additional supports. Adelphi University is located in Garden City NY.
