My new dining room set
When my husband and I first got married he came across an awesome dining room set really inexpensively. It was used but definitely “like new”. It has a hutch, dining room table with two leaves, and six chairs. BUT, the seats were a fabric with a white background and some pinstripes. It looked okay when it was newish – but 20 years, 5 kids, and a total of 10 dogs later – not so new anymore and very stained. We had to resort to the tie on cushions to hide all the stains on the chair cushions. But not to worry – now that I feel pretty invincible with my projects (just kidding) I decided to give the dining room set a freshen up. First, I had to sand down all the puppy chew marks on the legs of every chair. Then I restained the legs and rungs. Naturally I scrubbed the chairs clean before I did all that. Then I moved on to my favorite part – remove the seats, take off that nasty fabric and replace with my new fabric. Fortunately I have access to an Affordable Fabrics store (all fabric is $1.99 per yard) – so for $10 worth of fabric and $5 worth of stain I gave the old dining room set a whole new look and life. I only used 1 1/2 yards on the seat cushions – the rest I made into a table cloth for the table to match the chairs.

And these are the chairs side by side…
So for a tiny bit of money and about 3 1/2 hours worth of work (and lots of sweat) – I actually love my set now! And the kids just kept telling me how amazing I was the whole time I did it. They are like my own personal cheerleaders.
