The new couch cover
We have dogs – yes, multiple and they are huge. We have a Weimaraner, Newfoundland and an English Mastiff. And as much as some of you may find it awful that I let them on my couch – realistically there just isn’t enough floor space in the living room for all three. But I keep the furniture covered at all times. No, they are not the expensive fitted covers but they are sturdy durable covers. This is the one I made this week. I actually headed into my sewing room to make a nice beach blanket – but there I went – getting sidetracked again. Fortunately I didn’t need it this weekend for the beach so I have at least another week to strategize my evenings to be able to make a beach blanket.
This blanket utilizes the same upholstery fabric I used to re-upholster our dining room chairs. But that fabric wasn’t wide enough for our large couch. But I have so many yards of black corduroy (did I mention I have access to an Affordable Fabrics – hense the large stash of certain fabrics). I cut the corduroy to the same length and split it down the middle of it’s width. I then sewed the black corduroy to the left and right sides of the upholstery fabric. I made this cover so long because I hate it when it slips down and I constantly have to get up to re-place it on the back of the couch – otherwise what kind of covering would it be doing. This one hangs all the way down to the floor in the back. And I have to tell you it is so heavy. The weight of the fabric behind the couch seems to keep it pretty much in place. And it was so heavy it was quite a struggle to sew that much fabric in as straight a line as I could.
Here is the end result. My family loves it and I must admit – so do I. I don’t have any more of that upholstery fabric though so I will have to see if I can get some to cover the two chairs in the living room too. The dogs don’t go on those but they may as well match!
