Crutch cap tutorial

I have had a constant need to make crutch caps – in my adult life I have spent years (if you add it all up) on crutches.  I have not been on them much more recently but it is inevitable that I will need to use them again at some point.  I make crutch caps for crutches to serve two purposes – first and foremost, the rubber arm pads HURT! That never gets any better so crutch caps at least eliminate all that “burning”.  Secondly, if I have to spend that much time on crutches I at least want them to be somewhat fashionable.

But for this tutorial, I made them for a co-worker who ended up on crutches.  I did not make the more elaborate version because hopefully she will only be on them for a very short period and I was very short on time.  But these absolutely serve the purpose.  Eventually I will circle back and post a tutorial for the more elaborate version.

I used a remnant piece of green fleece fabric

Measured 1 inch wider than crutch pad and 1 1/2 inch taller when folded in half

Measure the decorative fabric approximately 1 inch all the way around each cut of fleece

Sew the decorative fabric with a double rolled hem to the fleece
It ends up resembling a large potholder

Add velcro to the edges

Wrap over top of crutch and seal with velcro

There you have it…
