The Blue Cape

My daughter and I love capes and ponchos so I thought I would share some with you.  This first one is made with two layers of fleece – a solid navy blue and a blend of light and dark blue – the side she prefers but it is reversible.  We used pink decorative trim and a cloak hook to finish the “look”.

First you need to cut fabric into a circle.  To do this I basically cut a square of each fleece.  The dimensions of the square are the length of her arm from wrist to wrist – measuring straight across her chest.  Then fold the square twice and cut an arc at that same length.  Before unfolding the cone shaped arc – I cut a smaller arc at the top – very small – for her neck.

Perform the same routine with the lining color.  Then cut from the bottom all the way up to the neck hole in one spot after it is all the way open – this will be where you add the trim and the cloak hook – the opening.  Sew the neck line and down the opening – all the way to the bottom.  But you will not sew along the bottom – sew about 2 1/2 inches from the bottom so you can cut a fringe after it is sewn.

Cut your fringe – just like you would cut it on a tie blanket – you just won’t tie them.
Sew the trim on and cloak hook (the hook needs to be sewn by hand).
