Right up front I want to say that I don’t for one minute believe that this is the healthiest of all snacking options. Certainly fruit and veggies are at the top of that list. The problem is fruit is not even on my son’s radar. So I must make modifications for him if I expect him to make decent choices.
This is not rocket science but it works for us. I simply allow my kids to each choose a box of cereal at the grocery store. One that they can eat dry (think popcorn) and be perfectly happy. The options generally include any of the Cherrios, Kix, Trix, Cocoa Puffs, Apple Jacks or some other cereal that grabs their interest. Fortunately they do tend to gravitate towards Cherrios and not the really sweet cereals. Me – I like Special K Fruit and Yogurt. I actually do not like Special K with milk but I do love it dry.
I fill half a sandwich bag with each (equals about two servings per bag) and store in a basket right on the kitchen table. Then instead of asking me for ice cream or some sort of candy – they automatically know just to start grazing on a bag of cereal.
