Surviving The Fiscal Crisis Series – Day 1
Today is Day 1 – I couldn’t see waiting the few days for 1/1/13 so I started today. I have not received any inserts yet. I will not until next week because they ship on Thursdays. Today’s papers only include the Proctor and Gamble insert but that is one of the most useful inserts – almost everything in there we use and at the moment – need.
Today I only shopped at CVS and Big Y since we are cleaning up from a snow storm. Here are my shopping trips. You will not see a 97% savings, nor is that my goal. I could do it if I bought the best deals only regardless of what my needs are but I don’t do that. I shop based on what we will use; what I think others are in need of; or what I can make money on to buy what I need.

Tips for CVS
Always scan your card at the ExtraCare Kiosk before you start shopping. Those coupons alone often net free merchandise.
For example – I had a coupon for $2.00 off 2 Dove deodorants and $2.00 off 2 Tresemme Shamp/Cond. I bought all trial size (you can do that as long as the coupons do not exclude that option). For 2 Dove trial size deodorants and 2 Tresemme Travel shamp/cond it cost $.52.
Also those kiosk coupons can be used in conjunction with manufacturer coupons for double savings.
Some couponers would have split up the order into two orders – used my initial $10 ECB for the first order where if you spend $30 on certain Proctor and Gamble items (before coupons) you get $10 in ECB; Then you get another $10 ECB at the end of that order to use on the next order which was if you spend $10 on certain items (before coupons) you get $5 in ECB and leave that order with a $5 ECB. I didn’t feel like ringing up separate orders – next week I will just start with $15 ECB.
Nothing special and I didn’t use any coupons. I was strictly purchasing things we ran out of and trying to get the best deal while doing it. Total purchased was $114.46, savings of $65.26 after sales/clearance for a total cost of $49.20. Net savings of 57%.
The only other “deal” I plan to take advantage of this week is at Staples. The flyer has a $5 off $25 purchase coupon. They have Charmin Basic toilet paper 16 pack on sale for $6.99 (regularly $9.99). I will buy 4 packages for $27.96 less $2 in manufacturer coupons and less $5.00 Staples coupons. In the end I will have 64 rolls of toilet paper for $20.96 before tax – $.33 a roll. Savings of $19 or 48%.
