Should Have Been an Uneventful Eye Surgery…
So the other day I had eye surgery to remove subcapsular cataracts and replace a lens. I had my left eye done last year and now it was time to do my right eye. I wasn’t nervous at all since the left eye was so incredibly uneventful.
The surgery went smoothly and there were no surprises. Everything worked out.
For my followup appointment the next day they immediately determined my vision was already 20/20 and my eye wasn’t even healed yet (it takes longer than 24 hours to heal). Perfect. The only tiny issue was that pressure was building in my eye.
The doctor then numbed my eye with eyedrops (so he thought) and proceeded to take tweezers to try and release the pressure. Except… my eye wasn’t numb. As soon as he started I jumped. Let me warn you – you should never jump when there are tweezers in your eye!
Although my eye was fine after the surgery – now I have a torn cornea that has to heal. And let me tell you the last 24 hours have been more than a little uncomfortable. It will eventually heal but I just keep thinking – stupid, stupid stupid.
I know rationally jumping was not a smart idea but when you feel something sharp in your eyeball it is hard not to let the reflex take over…
Ugh…
I wonder why the drops didn’t work? Ah well, I hope you have a quick recovery though! I hope you will be able to see clearer soon!
The drops had apparently just not worked that quickly. They worked enough for him to repair some of the damage afterwards. But just not when he initially started. Thank you
I cringed as I read your story. I am so sorry that this happened to you. I don’t see how you could have avoided jumping. You didn’t expect to feel anything and it hurt. I hope you heal quickly.
Ugh, I’ve had a scratched cornea before – uncomfortable!
