Working With A Nutritionist Via Amwell

I am a huge supporter of Tele-Health services.  I have used them throughout the last two years for one thing or another. Throughout that time I have been a huge fan of Amwell and it has made a huge difference in the care for our family.

When it comes to being sick I totally love these services for so many reasons – especially when it comes to my kids.  No one likes sitting in a doctors office or their waiting room when they are sick.  Often getting out of bed is just too much of a task to even get there.  Of course once you are there, everyone is exposed to all the germs everyone else is bringing in too.  And if you aren’t trying to see your doctor for an illness – you will be the following week for sure.

Plus – there is the commute time to the doctor and home.  I learned in the last couple years that reaching out to tele-health services at those times is so much better.  We can reach a doctor right from our bed and get the help we need.  Yes, they can still call in prescriptions and yes they can still provide documentation for medical notes if you need it.

Welcome to Amwell

Amwell is even better!  Since I have experience with other services I will focus on why I like Amwell so much better.  First, as soon as you are on their home page you see a list of doctors that are online or offline.  This is very helpful so you can followup with professionals that you have previously interacted with.  And not that I have run across this but theoretically you could also avoid professionals that you may not have been as comfortable with.

They have medical services, psychological services – and my favorite – nutritionists!

I recently had the opportunity to call in to a nutritionist and I am so glad I did.  I am at the point in my life where wise and healthy ageing is a major priority.  The first step when using their services is to create an account and provide some basic information.  In some cases your insurance may also contribute to the cost of the visit – which is not the case with all tele-health services.  In my case, our insurance will pay for all but $10 of the nutritionist – although this visit was free.  This is very exciting for me because I have wanted to see a nutritionist but can never fit it in between everyone else’s schedule.  I also happen to be on a weight loss plan (Nutrisystem) at the moment and felt so much more comfortable consulting with a nutritionist while dieting – especially to help keep me on track with my “Flex Days”.

Amwell has registered dietitians that are experienced in sports nutrition and can provide individualized advice to help meet my exercise and performance goals.  They help to set realistic goals based on history and level of fitness as well as evaluating diet to determine nutritional deficiencies and areas for improvement.  This is so much better for our lifestyle – always on the run, always traveling and never wanting to miss out.

The RDs are among the most qualified healthcare professionals delivering nutrition education and medical nutrition therapy services for prevention, wellness and disease management.  Amwell hires only registered dietitians who must hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree with concentration in nutrition/dietetics; complete an accredited, supervised practice program in a clinical setting; pass commission on Dietetic Registration’s national examination; and complete 75 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every 5 years.

Amwell Services

With Amwell, I can just use my iPad for appointments while the kids are at horseback riding.  You can’t get much more convenient than that.  So now that I have had my initial visit I am confident that I will be able to develop a solid plan to follow and followup with the nutritionist.  This is truly exciting.  The fact that the insurance will cover a portion of the visit in the future is HUGE for me.  It leaves me with no excuse not to continue.  Creating an account only takes a few minutes.  You can access Amwell on your desktop, laptop, iPad, iPhone – as long as you have a camera and a speaker.  Once I even called Amwell in between rides while we were at Disney World – we didn’t miss any of the fun during this once in a lifetime trip and within 48 hours my daughter was good as new without missing anything.

Amwell Diet and NutritionDoctor visits are 10-15 minutes, therapist (psychologist) are 45 minutes while dietitian (nutritionist) are 30 minutes.  I was honestly shocked at the time and attention I received.

I had never heard of this, how awesome! Times are changing. I’d love to be able to do this, I may look into it. The only reason I’d go to the dr is to get a migraine shot or my yearly check up.

What a wonderful service. It’s so nice to know there’s a way to connect with a doctor at your own convenience, no matter where you might be at the time.
