Special Needs and Hyperacusis – HearMuffs To The Rescue

Do you have children with special needs?  Autism perhaps?  Or other special needs that include hyperacusis?  Hyperacusis is an extreme sensitivity to certain sounds based on frequency and volume.  This particular affliction has played a huge role in our lives.

Our son is autistic and is now 17 years old.  But in his younger years, a very clear trigger for his agitation was sound.  He couldn’t even be in a music class.  They would have him go but often he would run out.  He finally got to the point where he could remain in class but singing was never going to happen.  You’d never know it now as he has headphones and music on everywhere he goes. Now it is very clearly a coping mechanism.

Then along came our daughter.  She isn’t autistic but does have other needs and sound definitely freaked her out.  She would go to the afterschool program before all the other kids and would start on her homework.  The rest of the kids would come in and naturally along with their entry into the room was a trail of noise.  She would escalate right away and start screaming.  Eventually she would wear headphones at school (like the gun range kind with total noise blocking capabilities).  She is also now quite a bit older but still struggles sometimes.  She will no longer wear those types of headphones because it isn’t cool and no tween wants to stand out… So what is the solution?

HearMuffs!  Lucid Audio makes HearMuffs for babies up to 4 years in two styles, the HearMuffs, which provides hearing protections for little ones, and the HearMuffs Sounds, which also lets a child enjoy four soothing sounds and allows voices to be heard while compressing potentially harmful noises to comfortable levels (maximum volume 60DB). For kids ages 5-10, Lucid offers Kids HearMuffs or Kids HearMuffs Trio, which also has a conversation mode that allows comfortable sound levels in so your child can hear you speaking while actively keeping harmful sounds out, and can be used as headphones in any mode at any time using a media port to connect to an external device.  Although these are designed for kids aged 5-10, my daughter is 13 and wears them just fine and loves the control she has.

My daughter loves them.  They don’t look significantly different than traditional headphones.  She can easily wear them in front of a group of friends and have no issues whatsoever.  She can wear them on the bus – no questions asked!  We try to go to a Nascar race each year and I can’t wait for her to be able to take her HearMuffs with her!
