Isn’t it funny how we have different food cravings when the seasons change? Summer is finally here and with it comes our cravings for hot dogs. But no one wants boring old plain hot dogs – they need to be different and tasty!
We spend our summers traveling – we live in Connecticut but spend all of our time throughout New England and especially in Maine and New Hampshire. Eating can be difficult on the road but we take grills with us and a couple kitchen appliances for when we are in our RV and have access to plugs/electricity. We always have a 3 in 1 cooker with us and an indoor electric griddle. If we don’t plan properly then we will end up eating fast food much more frequently than we should or want to.
The secret is too choose foods and recipes that allow for versatility when cooking – can it be cooked on a grill, griddle and in a 3 in 1 cooker? Then it is perfect for us.
Today I bring you a recipe that is very versatile, is a family favorite as well as a great recipe for parties! My kids are always asking for Pigs in a Blanket – Gourmet Style. These are not your average Pigs in a Blanket!
We start with a favorite flavors ofHeluva Good!® Block Cheese – available at Walmart in cheese blocks. Heluva Good! Cheese is available in so many amazing flavors. I love shopping for this brand at Walmart because we can mix and match flavors in our recipes so everyone in my family gets to have their favorites.
You can choose to grate the cheese but we prefer to be a little more neat so I will share a secret with you. We shave off complete strips with a simple vegetable peeler and almost everyone has at least one of those around.
A package of croissant dough is needed as well as your favorite hot dogs. We love ballpark franks – who doesn’t want to eat ballpark franks in summer? A little piece of our favorite ball game while we are not at the parks.
Since we shave our cheese in sheets we simply layer it on the raw croissant dough. Next we place a hot dog on op and roll it all up nice and neat. Okay so many not so neat – we are pretty flexible with how neat it is or isn’t.
Bake for approximately 15 minutes (or cook on the grill etc… – until the croissant dough is nice and brown . We bake on silicone sheets so we don’t need to grease our cookie sheet but if you don’t use a silicone sheet or parchment paper – please remember you need to grease your sheet. The cheese will melt into some awesome gooeyness and you will absolutely love these!
This treat is perfect for the weekends we are traveling for horse shows. The kids all love a special treat in between their events and they are always starving!
What do we do what the Heluva Good! Cheese we don’t use in a recipe? Well use it in another recipe (of course) or slice it up for cheese and crackers for our lunches at school or work. Or even as cheese and crackers for when we go to the barn every day to care for our horses and do our chores.

- Pepper Jack
- Extra Sharp Cheddar
