Homeowners in Charleston may not think about their air quality much, but the truth is that it can play a major role in your comfort and safety at home. Dirty air ducts can increase the presence of a number of common contaminants in your home, as well as lowering the overall indoor air quality. Though duct cleaning alone isn’t enough to keep your air pristine, it is an essential part of good indoor hygiene. A quick search for “AC duct cleaning Charleston, SC” will turn up plenty of technicians in your area who can clean your dirty ductwork.

There are several reasons why cleaning your ducts is worthwhile. You may find that duct cleaning can save you money in many cases. The average home wastes a significant amount of energy in the heating and cooling process, in part because of dirty ducts. Additionally, dust and dirt in your ducts will result in a musty scent in your home when you run your HVAC, which can create more asthma and allergy triggers in your home.

Proper HVAC maintenance is also the best way to extend the life of your system. The extra effort required for your system to operate with dirty ducts puts more wear and tear on the system itself, which can result in the need for repairs. You should have your HVAC system inspected at least twice per year. The filter should be changed at least once every 90 days, but most HVAC professionals recommend a monthly filter change.

What else can you do to improve indoor air quality?

Preventive HVAC maintenance is an important part of taking care of your home, but it isn’t the only way to improve your indoor air quality. First, you should always stay on top of household chores. You should vacuum at least once or twice a week, using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, if you want to keep your home clean. Items that can trap allergens, like area rugs and long curtains, should be laundered as frequently as possible. If you live in a part of South Carolina that has good air quality, you can also try to open your windows more on sunny days.

You might be wondering why it’s so important to protect the quality of the air in your house, but breathing in polluted air can have serious consequences. It has been linked to the development of heart and lung problems like coronary artery disease, emphysema, respiratory infections, stroke, and even certain types of cancer. Air pollution isn’t considered a cause of death since it isn’t an illness, but it is a major contributing factor for many other illnesses.

As you can see, duct cleaning is an investment that will affect many aspects of your life at home. The health risks posed by poor air quality alone are reason enough to prioritize clearing out dirty ducts, but they can also increase the incidence of allergic reactions, raise your utility bills, and create unpleasant odors in your home. The good news is that your local HVAC technician can take care of your ducts and any other issues that arise with your HVAC system. Considering how important your HVAC is, it’s a smart idea to make sure it’s well maintained.

I know what cleaning out the air ducts mean. My daughter has severe allergies and when she came to live with us her sinus and allergies really kicked up. Found out the ducts in our house had NEVER been cleaned out. Whew, you should’ve seen the stuff that came out of them. We have animals and so much hair was in there.
