There is probably not a single one of us who has not heard about the issues of childhood obesity these days. Some facts that might bring this epidemic a little more in to focus are statistics provided by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). They state:

• The childhood obesity rate has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years.
• The percentage of children ages 6-11 years in the US who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012. Similarly, the percentage of adolescents aged 12-19 years who were obese increased from 5% to nearly 21% over that same period.
• In 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.

There are many factors that contribute to childhood obesity (easier access to fast food, higher calorie and more processed foods being served to children, etc.) but the simple fact is that too few calories are expended for the amount of calories that are consumed. With technology increasing on a daily basis, kids spend more time in front of a screen than ever before. This means that kids have a lot less physical activity in their lives than they did in past years.

As a parent, it is sometimes hard to compete with the latest greatest video game when it comes to keeping your child’s interest. That is why it is more important than ever to get our kids interested in activities that they can do outside the house. That is where a unique, fun outdoor activity –that can hold your child’s interest- becomes important.
