What to ask your vet?
Flea and Tick Control is available is so many different delivery methods. What are you looking for in Flea and Tick Control? What to ask your vet ? For me, I wanted something that was a chewable. I did not want to be putting anything on our dog’s skin or around her neck. Neither of those seemed to be an appropriate option for us. I have special needs children and didn’t want the kids touching any of the chemicals and then doing who knows what with the chemicals on their hands – usually their mouth. A chewable is ideal and BRAVECTO® has just that! It gets even better because it is a tasty chewable that my dog loves – I don’t need to try and trick her into taking it.
I also wanted protection and prevention that lasts for long periods – not something I would need to deal with weekly. BRAVECTO® offers a full 12 weeks of protection. *Bravecto kills fleas, prevents flea infestations, and kills ticks (black-legged tick, American dog tick, and brown dog tick) for 12 weeks. Bravecto also kills lone star ticks for 8 weeks.
Make sure you ask your vet about duration of protection and prevention. Many products will only work for a month. This lasts for approximately three months – just a little over four doses per year for full coverage!
Ask your vet how quickly flea and tick protection starts to work? Will it take 24 hours? Over the course of a week? BRAVECTO® starts as quickly as within 2 hours but within 12 hours – yup, all fleas are dead and gone! I always want something that works that quickly. As soon as I notice those fleas – I WANT THEM GONE! You?
What options are available only be prescription and are they FDA approved? BRAVECTO® is and it is only available from your veterinarian or veterinarian clinic. BRAVECTO®is approved only for dogs 6 months or older. This is because BRAVECTO® is prescribed based on weight. Puppies under 6 months of age grows rapidly and their weights change too much over the 12-week treatment period.
In addition to those questions you could ask your veterinarian what products are new in flea and tick control. Prevention and protection has come a long way and more modern choices like BRAVECTO® (fluralaner) work effectively for longer periods.
Ask what product would be best for your dog and your lifestyle? What would work best for you with dosing, administration, frequency etc… What about prescription versus over the counter products? Prescription products have more in depth safety and efficacy study requirements for approval – your veterinarian can explain the importance of those requirements. What should I expect from my flea and tick control? And of course, ask about BRAVECTO®!
Our dog is so important to us – as I am sure yours is! Do the research, ask the questions and do what is best for you and your dog.
