What To Look Out For When Buying A New Mattress

Purchasing a new mattress can be a headache if you don’t know what you are doing. There are all kinds of different beds out there that offer many different kinds of quality. You want the most comfortable, long lasting, and not bank breaking mattress that you can find. Every store is going to try to convince you that they are the best because the salesperson is just trying to get their sale. You have to know going in what you want and how much you are willing to spend.

Size Does Matter

The bigger the mattress, the larger the price tag is going to be. That’s the first thing you want to know when it comes to size. It doesn’t jump much from full size to queen size, but the leap from queen to king say for example: soft 12 inch mattress can put you back some.  It’s also important to know the space that you are putting the bed in. Make sure that you take measurements of the area and know whether you can make the move from queen to king if the price is right. You also have to think about the other ways a size change can affect you. There will be new sheets to buy for sure, but you may have to purchase a whole new bed frame, head board, and foot board. If you are prepared for this, then a size change can be very rewarding. So remember, size does matter!

Take Into Consideration The Pillows

Most people don’t even think about pillows when they are bed shopping, but the type of pillows that you have can make or break your bed experience on your first night, so remember to take into consideration the pillows you need. If you have purchased a more firm or softer bed than you are used to, you may need to add more or less pillow. You may also need to change your pillow type all together. Also, if you purchase a king size bed, it’s recommended that you get king size pillows for the bed. It’s less pulling and tugging the pillow around for you while you are sleeping and the aesthetic of your bed will be more pleasing. When choosing pillows for your bed, definitely keep in mind what your bed is made from. If you’ve purchased a memory foam bed, memory foam pillows are probably the best way to go. If you have purchased a more traditional mattress, then you have a wider range of comfortable pillow options.

Everyone sleeps differently and needs different support. An extra firm bed may be very comfortable for one person, but the next person may find it too hard or painful. Never purchase a bed without testing it first and, when you test it, lay on it for more than just a minute or two so you can really get a feel for it. Also, don’t be afraid to stretch out into your normal sleeping position and see how the bed feels. It can feel great one way, but when you change positions it could be better or worse. Don’t be afraid to try out several different beds. This is a purchase that you are going to want to last for many years to come, so take your time in choosing.

Price Range

You should know, before you go into your first store, what your price cap is. Salespeople will always try to sell you on the most expensive beds out there because they are going to make more money. If your hard cap for spending is $1000, make sure that they know that walking in. This will not only make them respect you more as a buyer, but will also save you both a lot of time looking at things that just aren’t possible. Also, know if you are going to want to try to finance something or not. This can make your price range waiver some, but also open up more opportunities for you and your salesperson.

What type of bedding are you planning on using?  Standard size or unique?  Is what you need for pillowcases, sheets etc… readily available?  And of course always a consideration is what type of fabric will your sheets and bedding be?  Do you like bamboo sheets, cotton, flannel?

When shopping for a new mattress, be firm about things, but also know that there are a wide range of beds out there that can meet your comfort and price. Don’t be afraid to shop around for a while. This is a big purchase and should be something that you take your time on. If a salesperson is making you feel rushed or pressured, take time to step back and come back to things. Remember, above all, this is your comfort and your peaceful sleep and that is the most important thing.
