Meet our dog – Xena Lee.  She is a 7 year old Newfoundland and she is such a family dog.  She loves her people (us) and hates to be separated from us.  We travel a great deal and we can’t take her everywhere we go.  We are fortunate that meme and pepe live with us so she can stay home and still be loved and with family.  But when possible we do prefer to take her with us and she loves to stick to my side and my husband’s side.

When we travel there are obviously priorities for our family but there are also priorities for her care and health.

Tips for summer fun and travel with your dog:

  • If you are traveling long distances make sure to plan appropriate bathroom and snack breaks.  Your dog’s schedule may be very different from yours.
  • Always make sure you have appropriate items to clean up after your dog’s bathroom breaks.  There should be nothing left behind.
  • Make sure vaccinations are up to date.  If your dog takes any medications – be sure to keep them with you.  Also, flea, tick and heartworm treatments should be up to date.  This year in particular, ticks are more abundant than ever and you want to make sure you take every precaution to protect them.  Our travels are almost always outdoors with our RV – camping, hiking, swimming etc…

  • Collars, leashes, harnesses etc… These are absolutely critical to keep your dog safe, and under your control at all times.  You can’t always control your environment but you can control and protect your dog.  We also need to bring a chain and stake.  We need to keep her an appropriate distance from any campfires etc…  She would not pay attention to the heat – just that she is near us.
  • Toys – dogs can become bored just as easily as children.  If your dog needs to chew – bring toys to chew.  If they need to run around – bring balls etc…If they have a special bed or blanket – bring it.

  • Dog dishes – depending on what is appropriate for your travels it could be metal bowls or collapsible bowls.  Whatever works best for you and your dog.  Our dog prefers metal bowls for her food and water.
  • Proper ID tags and microchipping.  The last thing you want to do is have your dog get loose and run away when you are ten hours from home.   You will want your dog found fast, safely and returned to you.

  • Grooming tools if you need them.  With a newfoundland – we NEED them all the time.
  • Appropriate first aid kit items.  Many are just as appropriate for humans but make sure you can also meet first aid needs for your dog.  Our first aid kit includes conventional treatments but it also has a basic assortment of essential oils for all of us.

  • Lastly and definitely not least important – appropriate food and treats.  We use dry dog food for Xena Lee.  She is very particular and will not eat many dog foods.  She has to have just the right dog food, in just the right bowls in just the right location!  Talk about finicky.

Wellness® CORE® RawRev™ dog food is our food of choice and she goes crazy for her dog food.  She loves each flavor variety and we are always thrilled when we can resort raw feeding for our sun bathing beauty.  Core RawRev dog food keeps her full all day long while she is hanging out by the fire, hiking, swimming etc…

This Core RawRev dog food seems like a fuel machine – it also gave her more energy than the dog food she used to eat. She was up and ready to go at five in the morning with the sun rising – ready to see what adventures the day was holding for her. Since she is high energy, she burns her food off really quickly, and she always looks like she isn’t gaining weight.  However after feeding her Core RawRev dog food has all the nutrients and protein to keep her in balance no matter how active she is (or isn’t).

She thrives on it and LOVES it.  It’s made from all natural ingredients and every ingredient helps your dog in some way.  The ingredients are all very purposeful.  I very much recommend Core RawRev dog food to anyone, especially those with picky eaters, or those who eat grain-free. It is a high protein, grain-free food with 100% raw meat pieces for that flavory, excellent taste dogs love, while also being balanced nutritionally.  Everything she needs to make the most of all of our vacations and travels.
