The Executive Assistant Career and the Impact of the Pandemic

Executive Assistant Careers and the impact of the pandemic

The pandemic has made an impact on so many careers, with more common remote working and some roles not being needed as much whilst others are needed more. We talked to an international Executive Assistant Training organisation who stated that they are seeing more people returning to work and looking to make career changes to become an Executive Assistant.

Why we are seeing more career changes to Executive Assistant roles?

There is a trend generally to increase the responsibility of an Executive Assistant. In the past, these roles were mainly admin support, but now the role is more varied and requires more business support. This means the role is more challenging and interesting. People see the role as more attractive this way and they will be able to gain more exposure and skills for future opportunities, which is why executive assistant certifications such as those offered at the Executive Assistant Institute are gaining in popularity.

How can I become an Executive Assistant?

Executive Assistant needs a range of skills, see a list of some key skills below:

  • Communication
  • Delegation
  • Prioritisation
  • Leadership
  • Flexibility
  • Organisational skills

These are just a few of the skills needed to be a good executive Assistant. Additionally, you will need excellent Microsoft Office Skills to ensure that you work quickly. Generally, training and gaining a qualification will be ideal for anyone looking to move into this career. This is very similar for people working in other careers, you need the qualification to show that you are making a career change but you can do the job. In the US and Europe, you can find numerous training providers that offer online, virtual, and live training. The most important is to make sure that the training content aligns with the needs of the job and that you can gain an accredited and recognised certification. We do find that there are now more online or virtual training courses available than live classrooms. Many people are still less keen to sit in a classroom and take a course.
