Waffle House vs IHOP: Which Restaurant Do Most People Prefer?

Waffle House and IHOP are very similar brands, and so it’s natural that people compare them to one another. They’re both famous breakfast restaurant chains, and they serve breakfast menu items all day. They both even came out in the 1950s as well.

It may be argued that IHOP is more popular than Waffle House, but that doesn’t mean that IHOP is actually better. Even if IHOP is better for most people, it’s still very possible that Waffle House may be more to your liking.

Waffle House

To help you make your own informed choice, here are some point-by-point comparisons:

Vibes

Waffle House

The place offers a very light-hearted atmosphere. It feels very homey, with its minimalist décor and bright lighting. Think of it as a place you’d expect in a small town. In many of the locations, you’d even find a jukebox, with mostly country songs though you have a few college songs included.

The servers are often very friendly, and they tend to recognize the regulars. These servers treat customers like buddies, adding to the small-town vibe quite nicely.

Keep in mind that the place is open 24 hours a day, so in the early mornings you’d have party-goers and clubbers here enjoying a snack or a meal before they head home. The patrons are very accepting, so you don’t have to dress special to come here.

IHOP

Here, on the other hand, you get a more citified dining experience. Instead of the small-town vibe, the feeling you get is what you’d expect if you happen to get inside a diner in NYC. You have modern décor with plush chairs, and the whole atmosphere welcomes visits by entire families. It’s quite casual and friendly too.

With the more urban feel of the place, it’s not surprising that the loudspeakers here play mostly modern pop music, with classic rock songs mixed in.

The place is also open 24 hours, but only on certain days. But it sure is nice to find the place clean even in the early mornings. Service is prompt and efficient.

Food

Waffle House

Yes, Waffle House serves breakfast items. But it also offers heavier fare for lunch and dinner (which you can also order at any time). Waffle House serves a wide range of scrumptious sandwiches along with dinner platters. You can go with customized burgers and salads. The steaks are also surprisingly tasty, even if you may not have heard about Waffle House’s reputation as a steakhouse. You really ought to try the T-bone, sirloin, and ribeye steaks.

Of course, for many, it’s the breakfast items that take center stage here. These are mainly the waffles and the pancakes, with lots of options for your toppings. Then you have crisp bacon with strong coffee, and you’re ready to face the rest of the day. It’s simple and comforting.

It’s a crime not to at least try the Blueberry waffle at one point, as it really hits the spot just right. With the syrup and butter, it’s just scrumptious. The hash browns are good options as well, as they’re cooked to a nice level of crispiness.

IHOP

Here, it’s mostly all about breakfast items. The brand proves that breakfast food can be eaten at any time, and you’d enjoy it. that’s certainly true at IHOP.

Perhaps the names of some of the dishes may be too cutesy for your liking, like the New Fluffy the Snowman Pancakes and the Rooty Tooty Fresh N’ Fruity Pancakes. But the waffles and pancakes here are no joke. They’re seriously good, as they’re made with premium ingredients. They’re all creamy, airy, and so fluffy.

It also doesn’t hurt that you have lots of toppings to choose from. You can go with butter and maple syrup. Or you can add slices of fruits such as blueberries and strawberries. Add in some fruit jams and whipped cream, and it’s a fun way to start the day.

IHOP even offers healthier options, as befits its citified atmosphere. Focus on the Simple and Fit menu, so you can get a guilt-free yet indulgent breakfast. Try the Two-Egg Breakfast, which comes with whole wheat toast, turkey bacon, and even scrambled eggs that are actually made from an egg substitute. You can also enjoy gluten-free pancakes.

Price

Waffle House is quite affordable, which matches its small-town vibe. Every single order generally costs less than $12 or so.

IHOP is a bit pricier, with its more urban vibe. But it’s not prohibitively expensive, either. The fantastic Breakfast Sampler comes with 2 eggs cooked your way, plus 2 cured hickory-smoked bacon strips, 2 pork sausage links, 2 thick-cut pieces of ham, gold hash browns, and a separate plate of 2 buttermilk pancakes. But it costs only a little over $15.

Conclusion

It’s up to you to pick which one you go with. Either way, you win. Whether you go with Waffle House or IHOP, you get a terrific breakfast at any time of the day!

I’ve never had Waffle House, but I definitely want to try their food. I do NOT care for IHOP at all, I don’t like how their eggs are and the rest of their food is pretty bland to me.
