Wonder Woman 84 Joins Movie Postponement Release

Until a few days ago, Warner Bros was still sticking to its guns and pressing ahead with their plans to release the new movie on June 5th this year. Filming wrapped on the production – which will star Gil Gadot as the superhero for the third time following her successful appearances in 2017’s ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Justice’ League – some time ago. It’s generally thought that all necessary post-production work has also been completed, and so the film is ready and waiting to go as soon as it gets the green light to be shipped out to theaters. We now know that it isn’t going to be in June. Many big-name films, including the latest James Bond movie, have been pushed back by as much as a year. It appears that Warner Bros is a little more optimistic about when all of this will be over than most of their rivals, though.

Instead of leaving fans up in the air about when they can expect to see Wonder Woman return to the big screen, the movie has been pushed back a little over two months and will now be released to cinemas on August 14th. Most scientists and Governments are working on the assumption that life will be able to return to normal for the world’s citizens within eight to twelve weeks, and so some degree of normality should have returned by July at the latest. If they’re right, there shouldn’t be an issue with the planned August release date. It’s impossible to be certain, though.

There are more practicalities that have to be considered with adjustments and postponements like this than just the release date of the film. There are also promotional materials and tie-in products that will also now presumably be pushed back. The film’s official soundtrack and toy range will also be delayed. Last time there was a ‘Wonder Woman’ film released, there was also a companion game released for online slots websites. Given the amount of money that the game made, it’s probably reasonable to assume that online slots websites were expecting to receive a sequel in the coming weeks, too. Now, given the lack of certainty about what’s going to happen next in terms of restrictions on gatherings and travel, you’d have a better chance of success playing slots UK than betting on the likelihood of Warner Bros being able to stick with the proposed new date.

Interestingly, Warner Bros appear to be prioritizing ‘Wonder Woman 84’ over some of the other major productions they were scheduled to release over the course of the next few months. ‘Scoob,’ which is a new ‘Scooby-Doo’ movie, was originally slated for a release on May 15th. ‘In The Heights,’ which is a big-screen version of the musical written and made popular by Lin-Manuel Miranda of ‘Hamilton’ fame, was supposed to open on June 26th. Both of those films have been yanked from the listings, and currently don’t have a new date assigned to them. August 14th was originally supposed to be the release date of ‘Malignant,’ another big-budget Warner Bros movie, but that too is now without a release date. ‘Wonder Woman 84’ appears to have stolen its slot.

The stance that Warner Bros has taken puts them at odds with some of the other major movie studios. With films ready to be released and revenue to be made, some studios are choosing to release their films directly to streaming services and start making money with them now instead of waiting for an indefinite period to see if conditions become more favorable in the near future. That initiative has been welcomed by fans of film who are stuck at home with very little to entertain them other than whatever they can find on television or streaming services. Studios make less from streaming than they do from people buying tickets to go to movie theaters, but many appear to have taken the decision that some money is better than no money, and the increase in demand that comes from so many people being sat at home with nothing to do might make up for the shortfall. Whether they’re accurate with that assessment or not remains to be seen.

Perhaps the desire to keep ‘Wonder Woman 84’ for cinemas is understandable. Warner Bros have spent a figure in the region of $180m on filming the movie and producing it, and they’ll spend more money on top of that promoting it as it approaches its day of release. A large-scale expenditure like that will put a significant dent in the company’s bottom line if it becomes impossible to recoup that outlay, and so it may make more sense for them to wait a while and give themselves a better chance of making all of their money back rather than jumping the gun and letting everyone see it cheaply.

We all probably have bigger things to worry about right now than what should or shouldn’t be on at movie theaters, but at the same time it’s important to have distractions, and we’re looking to the entertainment industry to provide us with those distractions until it’s safe for us all to go outside again. Fans of superhero films all around the world were looking forward to the new ‘Wonder Woman’ movie with a great deal of anticipation, but they’re going to have to be patient and wait a little while longer. Even with all of their special powers and incredible abilities, there are some enemies that even a superhero can’t overcome.
