5 Ways To Make Your Life Better Before The End Of The Year

Many people wait until the start of a new year to make any kind of significant changes in their lives.

This is because they view the 1st of January as a clean slate – a chance to wash away any of the mistakes they made the previous year and really push themselves toward their goals moving forward.

However, despite their best intentions, this rarely results in significant long-term change. In fact, 80% of New Year’s Resolutions are abandoned by February each year.

Though there are many reasons for this, from a lack of clear targets to poor motivation, it often comes down to the fact that we put too much pressure on ourselves to succeed or make a change at a specific time. Furthermore, by introducing numerous large changes at once, many of which we won’t see the benefits of for several months, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or as though those goals remain out of reach.

That’s why you should never wait until the new year rolls around to start making changes – especially if you’re looking to really turn your life around. After all, the sooner you take the first step, the sooner you’ll reach that finish line. This also gives you the chance to introduce change gradually, making it easier to adapt to the deviations in your routine.

Furthermore, there’s no reason to see this year as a lost cause. You can make a lot of changes in three months! With that in mind, here are five ways in which you can make your life better before 2024 ends – giving yourself a head start on what would have become your New Year’s Resolutions.

One: Start Taking Care of Your Body.

Making an effort to take better care of your body between now and January can yield incredibly positive results – though this doesn’t mean that weight loss needs to be your primary goal.

For example, you may instead want to turn your focus to getting in shape so that you have more energy on a day-to-day basis or to increase your stamina. This way, you won’t feel quite winded when you take the stairs at work, and you can participate in hobbies and activities you would have previously avoided.

You can achieve this goal by introducing more cardiovascular exercises into your routine. Don’t worry; this doesn’t mean you need to start each morning with a run (unless this is something you enjoy), as even a daily walk can make a real difference. After all, this can improve everything from your heart health to your mobility. It does, of course, require a certain level of discipline, as it means you’ll have to commit to walking even on days when the sun isn’t shining – though you could always find a place to walk indoors in these cases.

Two: Improve Your Sleeping Pattern.

If you’ve grown accustomed to running on little sleep, you may not really be aware of the issues surrounding your poor sleeping habits – but it is important to be mindful of this. After all, the quality of your sleep can impact everything from your mood and irritability levels to your focus at work. It can also put your health under significant strain. However, studies suggest that you can usually repair your ‘sleep debt’ within a few weeks if you make a conscious effort to do so.

Fortunately, there are many steps that you can take that may come to your aid when trying to develop a healthier sleep schedule. For example, you should start by ensuring you’re creating the right atmosphere in your bedroom so that you’re able to fall asleep as quickly and easily as possible. If you live in a noisy area (or home more generally), you may want to look into soundproofing your bedroom. This way, you can keep all distractions to a minimum.

In addition to this, you should try to avoid caffeine in the afternoon, even if you’re feeling an energy slump after having your lunch. This is because you may otherwise still be dealing with the effects of the stimulant late into the night (while also fueling your caffeine dependency).

Three: Improve Your Diet.

Working to improve your diet can also help you to make your life better before the end of the year. After all, this can help you to facilitate healthy weight loss or build muscle, and it is even tied to improved mental health and focus levels.

However, this does not mean you should overhaul your entire diet overnight. Doing so could mean you fall into ‘diet fatigue’ very quickly, returning to old habits before the month is out. Instead, try to introduce changes a little more gradually.

For example, you should start by ensuring that you eat a healthy, balanced breakfast each morning. While this may seem like a no-brainer, 13% of people routinely skip breakfast, despite the fact that this often provides you with the energy you need to start your day on the right foot.

Once you’ve adjusted to this change,  you can begin to think about other alterations you’d like to make to your diet. For example, if you have a renowned sweet tooth, you could begin to substitute your daily candy and chocolate with a healthier alternative, such as a vegan flapjack.

Four: Plan Out The Next Step In Your Career.

Whether you’re trying to determine what the next rung on the ladder should be or want to open your own business, the sooner you lay the foundations for your next career move, the better. While this does not mean that you’ll be in a new role before the year is out (though you should never say never), it does mean that you’ll be taking steps in the right direction.

Of course, it is difficult to take the next step in your career if you are not sure what direction you’d like to head in. Luckily, there are many ways in which you can help make this vision a little clearer. For example, you may want to work alongside a careers counselor or ask a more senior member of your team for advice and guidance. This way, you can be sure that you are putting your best foot forward, whether you’d like to increase your earning potential or take on more responsibility.

Furthermore, there’s plenty of time left in the year to start actioning these goals. For example, you could enroll in an online or in-person training program that provides you with plenty of opportunities to develop new skills.

Five: Take care of your mental health.

Working to take good care of your mental health can also be transformative. After all, whether you’re dealing with anxiety or depression, you deserve to live a life that is not controlled or dictated by negative emotions. While this may seem impossible right now, there are plenty of avenues that you can explore in this regard – all of which will improve your life before the end of the year.

The first (yet perhaps most difficult) is talking openly about how you are feeling. Though this can be challenging, especially if you prefer to keep your inner thoughts to yourself, opening up will leave you feeling as though you’ve taken a great weight off your shoulders. This is because, in speaking to another person about how you are feeling, you’ll quickly learn that you are not alone, even if you may feel that way.

If you do not feel ready to open up to your friends and family, then you should reach out to a mental health professional, such as a licensed therapist or counselor, instead. After all, not only does this then mean that you have somebody to turn to, but they’ll also be able to provide you with actionable advice and guidance on the steps that you can take to reduce or cope with these feelings moving forward.

Another way in which you can begin to take better care of your mental health is by spending more time outdoors or increasing your exposure to natural light indoors. While this may seem odd, various studies have found that exposure to natural light triggers the release of specific endorphins in the brain, including serotonin and dopamine – which are often considered to be the ‘happiness hormones.’ It can also go a long way toward reducing our cortisol levels!

Final Thoughts.

With just three months left in 2024, it’s easy to fall into the trap of believing it’s too late to make any real, actionable change. After all, so much of the year has already passed you by, and yet you’re still stuck in the same routine you’ve followed for years on end. However, allowing this kind of mindset to control you means that you’ll never make the changes you desire, not even if they are labeled ‘New Year’s Resolutions.”

In short, there’s no time like the present when it comes to actioning positive changes – if you look for them, you’ll always find reasons to delay getting started. Furthermore, getting started now means that you’ll see results before the end of the year!
