St Francis of Assisi is the Patron Saint of animals. He’s also one of the most popular of all Catholic Saints. This St Francis pet medal is unique in that on its back side it holds a capsule of soil collected from the grounds of the Papal Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Assisi, Italy. St. Francis is buried in a crypt built under the Basilica.
It is hoped that this sacred soil will invoke the heavenly protection of St. Francis upon the dog bearing the medal. A clear epoxy coating is applied to the back side of the medal to protect the capsule.
The medal has a relief image of a kneeling St. Francis giving his blessing to a dog. A Franciscan-brown colored coating of enamel is applied as a background to the relief image and to the wording in the outer band. The medal had a one-inch in diameter and is made of silver alloy. It is made in Italy.
We have two dogs and a horse. One of our dogs has been ill for the last two years and in the last few months her health has spiraled out of control and for the worse. She will be passing any day even though we have tried absolutely everything to keep her with us. We did keep our medal with us and pray on it daily but sometimes things are just beyond our worldly control.
This medal is a high quality well made medal. The Assisi Soil is a really nice touch and makes it all that much more impressive. It is about the size of a nickel and very impressive.

I used to train and foster abandoned dogs, together with my roommates. (All together, we had a total of 16 dogs – not all at once!). Bonnie was an arthritic, 11 year old Golden Retriever, and we thought nobody would adopt an ailing old girl like that. We had her for a long time….nobody wanted her. Well, don’t you know, Father Dave came and gave her the blessing of St. Francis of Assisi – she was adopted the next week! Not just adopted, but by a rich lady who loved to care for old dogs. She even had an elevator in her house, so her dogs wouldn’t have to struggle up the stairs. Bonnie spent her last years in the lap of luxury, in a fancy home which fronted on a golf course, getting the best of veterinary care. St. Francis comes through!
