Around 48% of people skip their lunch break at least once a week. There’s always so much to do, after all, and if taking an hour out means staying later, surely you’re better off just eating at your desk? Or perhaps not. 

Studies reveal that a failure to take regular breaks can result in significant productivity dips, and increases the risk of burnout. So, there’s no denying breaks are important. And, how you spend those breaks is equally crucial. After all, you’ll hardly feel refreshed if you’ve spent an hour scrolling social media on yet another screen.

Instead, you should make an active effort to not only take your breaks but to ensure your brain gets as much as possible out of them. These healthy fast-fire lunch break hobbies could help you do precisely that.

We know what you’re thinking – you couldn’t get stuck into downward dog in the breakroom! But a daily yoga practice can prove invaluable for your mind, body, and soul at work. As well as stretching out your stiff muscles, yoga is great for refreshing your brain and giving a much-needed energy boost in the middle of the day. If you feel self-conscious about break room yoga, something like chair yoga, or even basic standing poses like an upward salute can work well. On sunny days, you could even move your yoga outside to enjoy a boost of serotonin and some much-needed fresh air on top of those all-important stretches.

Strategic games like crosswords, solitaire, and chess are fun, involved, and guaranteed to switch your brain onto matters other than your latest client account. What’s more, these games are great for your brain, encouraging skills that include analytic thinking, problem-solving, and an observant eye. When you take time out to play games like chess during your breaks, either using a set in the breakroom, or on your phone as you sit outside, you can refresh, rejuvenate, and instantly feel happier. When you get back to your desk, you should also find that, far from having wasted time, these games have ensured you re-approach your work with a brand new outlook.

It can be difficult to find time to check in with yourself during the workday, so why not do it on your lunch break? Journaling is great from a wellness perspective, as it helps to arrange your thoughts, work through negative emotions, and generally articulate your feelings. Whether you write about your personal life or a work problem, managing just a few pages in a dedicated journal during your break, preferably away from your desk, will serve as a great refresh. Like mind games, journaling can also be a great way to challenge an approach that isn’t working, meaning it may also end up helping your work for the rest of the day. That’s a win-win.
